Abstract. This paper seeks to develop an accurate understanding of the rule of law from a Central European perspective and to highlight contemporary challenges in its protection, focusing on Hungary within the context of increasingly constraining supranational oversight. The first section revisits the definitional foundations of the rule of law, applying them to Hungary and emphasizing its distinctive reception and implementation. The second section addresses interpretative issues arising from the transitional constitutions, while the third underscores the crucial role of judges, particularly regarding the internationalization of rule of law protection. The fourth section examines the specific case of Hungary, which has been subjected to continuous and increasingly punitive scrutiny over its compliance with the rule of law, exploring the underlying causes and assessing the consequences of such oversight.
